Time and Twitter as Future Culture

Reading today’s Time article we are reading the future.

The article’s date is one week ahead of itself as “June 15, 2009” will not occur until 1 week from now.

Is this an error? or a poignant harbinger of Marshal McLuhan‘s statement, the future of the future is the present?

In this article, Time’s Richard Stenger explores the importance of Twitter not as a tool but as the message itself. That message being Twitter’s “characteristics–real-time conversation, instant links, groups of followers–will affect the platforms that come after.”

More than an interesting read, the call to action is clear: we must immediately adapt to changing technologies with original content “in a way that is organic to those new mediums” to remain relevant, build communities of followers, and, therefore, survive.

Thus, relevancy, growth, and survivability will be determined by our authentic participation thru these new mediums.
