The iPad Is “The Message”

It’s all about media in the media…

The internet and social media disruption to former “traditional media” formats became ever more distinct as Rupert Murdoch announced his iPad Newspaper.

Rupert Murdoch is currently leading the charge to build The Daily, an iPad-centered newspaper. Yep, that’s iPad centric; to include all forms of tablet computers for its future news presentation and distribution.

Today more than 65 percent of Fortune 500 companies
are deploying or piloting the iPad.    -Apple Inc.

Seems Murdoch is advancing what will soon become more commonplace in both enterprise and consumer trends.

iPad: An Enterprise and Social Game Changer

Calling Apple’s iPad “an exception” and “more than just the latest consumer gadget,” Gartner Research recently sent a clarion call world wide to CEOs and business enterprises. Gartner called for CEOs to get directly involved in specific technology device decisions with their CIOs based on the iPad’s disruptive potential for business. Recent news posts cite that change is happening, and fast.

[T]he iPad is not a notebook replacement for most users,
but a valuable companion device. As it is much less
intrusive in face-to-face environments than conventional
notebooks, it is well suited to a sales or information-sharing
environment. It also makes electronic media consumption
effortless and casual, thereby increasing consumption

Media is changing the face of mass media and business, and mediating the rate at which we will mediate all media. And the iPad is the message.

Facebook makes its move on Foursquare with Places

Facebook makes a bold move on Foursquare and Gowalla with its location based Facebook Places.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Facebook offers Places as a killer location-based mobile app and also as a service that you can also directly access from your web browser.

Users of Foursquare will be in awe. Places features a slimmed down web based format that presents information in a format that’s most suitable for mobile web devices (see image below).  It is fully featured, offering access to your Home, Profile and Friends and Inbox.

Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev recently hit over 77,000 Twitter followers in both English and Russian versions of the social networking site. A slow start in comparison to President Obama’s launch of the whitehouse Twitter channel, but nonetheless significant.

After his June 23 visit to Silicon valley, the Russian head of state has made quite a splash with his social networking.

But wait. There’s more. Hoping to inspire more Russians with our Western techno driven culture in connectivity,  Medvedev also blogs on Livejournal.

The Apple Gizmodo incident is one of many of today’s issues that demand we discuss and reconsider what use to be the most common assumptions:

What is news? What is a journalist?

Who makes news? Who reports news? What is a news source?

Are bloggers journalists?

Are bloggers and online content creators protected with the same rights and by the same laws that protect journalists in our offline world?

It was more than 3 years ago – a light year in internet time – that I saw Michael Wesch‘s mind breaking video The Machine is Us/ing Us.

In summary, due to the internet’s malleable nature that genuinely promotes creativity, remix, and innovation, we will need to rethink: copyright, authorship, identity, ethics, governance, privacy, commerce, love, family, ourselves.

Apple Gizmodo only seems to have expedited our need to truly grapple with this question now.
