How social are you? Medvedev has 77000 Twitter Followers

Dmitry Medvedev and Steve Jobs iPhone gift via APWeb 2.0 Chic: Russia’s Medvedev and Apple’s Steve Jobs gawk at the iPhone 4

Techno savvy? Web 2.0 chic?

Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev recently hit over 77,000 Twitter followers in both English and Russian versions of the social networking site. A slow start in comparison to President Obama’s launch of the whitehouse Twitter channel, but nonetheless significant.

After his June 23 visit to Silicon valley, the Russian head of state has made quite a splash with his social networking.

But wait. There’s more. Hoping to inspire more Russians with our Western techno driven culture in connectivity,  Medvedev also blogs on Livejournal.

Is the publishing industry dead?

Garrison Keillor make a plaintive case on self publishing’s disruption to the publishing industry, reminiscing of the days where paper meant something and being “an author” was a rite of passage for a chosen few.

Self publishing is as easy as a text, a tweet, a Blurb, or an eBook on Scribd or Lulu.

…that is the future of publishing: 18 million
authors in America, each with an average
of 14 readers, eight of whom are blood relatives.

So how do writers, journalist, poets publish to survive? Will publishers themselves survive by aggregating and redistributing online content down new channels to expand the individual’s reach?

Keillor’s lament and the continued growth of self publishing underscores the need to continuously build our personal and professional networks as this socially mediated mode of communication, the internet, continues to provide greater and greater access and voice to millions who have something to say.

What is a Fan?

Fans, fan pages, followers, friends, readers, viewers, audience.
What is a “fan”?fans at a concert

Fans are mysterious objects
pushing unseen forces:
a turbulent presence
that can support and cool
and can move others toward us
or destroy us.

Fans are mysterious objects
we must feed and embrace.

How to feed a fan
What content do you posit online, thru RSS and email to feed their imagination of your brand?

Fans need a tangible connection to the object of their fascination or attraction. Over time, that attraction may become imaginary or even mythic.

I’m famous for being nicer to my fans than anyone on the face of the Earth… -Actor, James Woods

Though fans need to be fed to sustain their attraction. They want to be tantalized, not force fed. They don’t want spin nor spam. They want authenticity. Fans want you to leave it up to them to follow the conversion links of their curiosity.

So why do we need fans?

Fans Love Us
And, respectfully, we should love our fans as they want to be loved in return. Especially if we want their continued support.

Fans are the lifeblood…
They are our psyche; that breath of life that sustains and fuels and inspires us.

And in turn, we and our brands are the image that our fans aspire to- even if only in imagination.

Our fans needs us, and we need them.

Fans are mysterious objects.
