What is an author and a publisher in the digital age?

The former is easy to answer; someone who creates. A writer, a novelist, a poet, a law maker, a painter, software engineer. But what is a publisher? Simply put, one who makes something public.

Publishing has changed dramatically with the advent of email and then text messaging, websites, blogs, twitter and now ebooks. Each of these platforms enables us to reach more and more people with our content. this has dramatically disrupted the traditional publishing industry much like

So who is the publisher?

You. The role of publisher has moved from the traditional model of a company or press that reproduces an author’s printed content for public distribution.

For the solopreneur or writer, its publishing your novel via twitter, a blog, and a print on demand service like Lulu, Createspace, Blurb or Scribd. Creation and mass public distribution has never before existed on the scale as it does today.

The author of today is the publisher.

Facebook Like button Turns Web Pages into Two-Way Communication Channels

Message to Facebook:

Just because I “Like” a web page, post or video
doesn’t mean I want nor give my permission
to be contacted “back” by that post’s publisher.

After its recent update, users will find that clicking the Facebook Like button on any web page now enables publishers to publish back content to the feeds of all people who liked a specific page.

This turns all webpages on the internet with a Like button into a two-way communication channel.

The Good.

Well, this now allows publishers to directly publish replies as News Feed content in “all” users who clicked their Like button on their object: blog post, video, picture, link etc.

The Bad.

Spam. Here’s the scenario. You like a post or video on any website that you want to share on your Facebook News Feed or Wall.. Suddenly you get contacted back by the Publisher of the post about, how you can buy this or come to the show, etc. This is spam.

This FB update may be seen as a good step in enabling greater communication on the web, but IMHO, I find it a bit intrusive.

Bug Fix

One solution would be adding an option in the Like button for “Ok to Reply via Like button.”

Fortune Magazine interviews Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos.
Like many entrepreneurs, Jeff Bezos gets his inspiration in the shower.
Fortune Magazine recently interviewed the Amazon founder on the direction of publishing and Amazon’s Kindle: the portable electronic book reader.
The showers seem to work. Amazon’s profit is up 68% ($299 million) from a year ago, and the online publisher accounted for about 80% of all electronic book sales last year in 2009.
So what is the future of content sales for the sales giant, Amazon?
Bezos says its building a more flexible company that’s always experimenting to stay customer-centric. He holds the same idea for the future of content consumption in asking the question of “what is a book?” His answer is, the book itself is the narrative. Narrative is “the thing that people create.” Not the ink, paper or binding; the content.

The Future of Publishing

Thus, Bezos looks to harnes Amazon’s future around content creation and distributed consumption.
“What you’re going to see [in the future] is a share shift from one group of publishers to this other group of publishers.”

What will be Amazon’s Killer App?

Its clear that Bezos sees it as facilitating the tipping point when the multitude of individual publishers using low cost, free self-publishing services like Blurb, Lulu, Scribd, or Amazon’s own CreateSpace, offering lower prices, will tip the publishing market power to drive more consumers.
More publishers, lower cost of production, lower prices. Bezos may have his finger on the pulse of the future of publishing and who will be the future publishers.
